World-first: fibre reacts autonomously to changing net conditions

    -

Telia Carrier andĀ Infinera have completed a network field trial demonstrating autonomous intelligent transponder (AIT) technology.

The live field trial showcased fibre optic transmission systems autonomously adapting to changing network conditions in real-time. This capability enables better service quality and performance while simplifying operations.

    Use cases

The proof of concept, which used AIT prototype technology developed by Infinera, was conducted on a live 1,500-kilometre fibre route in Telia Carrierā€™s backbone network, which connects Munich, Zurich, Strasbourg and Frankfurt.

The trial featured multiple use cases that tested AIT capabilities under varied channel conditions and quality impairments, including the impact of neighbour channels, ageing components and the adding and dropping of channels.

In all cases, the AIT autonomously adapted transmission parameters such as modulation schemes. This minimises network cost and maximises performance, including total fibre capacity throughput and spectral efficiency, the partners say.

    Mission-critical IoT

Mattias Fridstrƶm, Chief Evangelist, Telia Carrier, said, ā€œAs mission-critical Internet of Things applications drive increased demand for low-latency, high-quality network connectivity ā€“ at all times ā€“ the underlying optical infrastructure will require a new level of responsiveness and adaptability.ā€

ā€œThis field trial reinforces the importance of advancing the agility of high-capacity infrastructure through innovation in cognitive networking, one of the pillars of our vision of the Infinite Network,ā€ added Parthi Kandappan, Chief Technical Officer at Infinera.
