Operators and MVNOs will be able to launch their own Wi-Fi calling app for Android smartphones, after a new company launched a white label service.
Dubbed Switchboard, the service from Mobilise Consulting offers operators an app and management system to deliver voice over Wi-Fi.
The technology was soft launched in January and uses Mobilise’s CC Routing platform. It brings together call routing, client management and a data platform to provide VoIP and circuit switch calling.
The UK-based company said the platform can be used with pre and post-pay services and can be rolled into operators’ existing billing platforms.
An iOS version of the service is currently in beta testing and would be available in the coming weeks. Mobilise has signed up Globecom Services, which will offer calling across the UK and Europe, as its first customer. It said discussions were ongoing with several other enterprises.
Yesterday, EE became the first operator in the UK to launch its own native Wi-Fi calling service.
Vodafone will become the next UK operator to offer Wi-Fi calling, with a native service due in the summer. Three launched an in-app voice over Wi-Fi service last year.
Ciaran McHugh, Globecom’s Operations Director, said: “Wi-Fi home networks and hotspots are now critical tools for network carriers to keep up with growing mobile data use.”
