Vodafone has rolled out HD voice technology to 3G and 4G customers on its UK network.
The operator said that compatible phones will automatically switch to the HD service when in range, with 4G users able to connect to service when placing calls over the 3G network.
However, the service will only be available for calls within Vodafone’s network.
The operator said that HD voice captures sound waves twice as fast as standard calls and more accurately transmits the tone and pitch of human speech as it uses a wider range of frequencies.
Fergal Kelly, Technology Director at Vodafone UK, commented: “Our HD Voice brings our best call quality to our customers. It is another important step towards our commitment to deliver our strongest ever network to the UK.”
Last month, research firm RootMetrics ranked Vodafone the lowest of the UK’s four mobile operators in terms of network quality.
Vodafone has pledged to invest £1 billion (€1.2 billion) this year to improve its network. It is currently expanding its network to 98 percent of the UK population. It claims to have recently expanded its 4G coverage to over 313 towns and cities, in addition to “thousands” of smaller communities in UK.
Earlier this month, the operator made its 4G LTE service available to pay-as-you-go customers.
It currently has around 6.7 million 4G customers across Europe, including over a million in the UK.
