Vodafone has launched a multi-vendor and chipset manufacturer 5G research project, aimed at preparing its network for the next generation of mobility.
The operator is working with Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Nokia and Qualcomm in tests in its UK Innovation Labs.
The trials will help define standards, establish technical guidelines and help the operator develop product roadmaps.
Live trials will take place on Vodafone’s radio and core networks in selected markets.

“We expect 5G to radically enhance the speed, resilience and intelligence of mobile networks, enabling Vodafone customers to remain confidently connected as their usage of mobile data increases.”
Enrico Salvatori, Senior Vice President and President of Qualcomm Europe, added: “5G will take on a much larger role than previous generations, not only enhancing mobile broadband services, but also expanding connectivity for the internet of things and new types of mission-critical services that require lower latency, higher reliability and robust security.”
Vodafone has joined an increasingly crowded field of research into 5G technology. This morning, Ericsson joined Telefónica in the Spanish operator’s 5G programme. The Swedish vendor has been one of the busiest companies in this research area.
