TIP to collaborate with O-RAN Alliance, GSMA, OpenStack Foundation and others

    -

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) has announced new collaborations with telecom industry organisations and plans to expand existing partnerships.

TIP is working with the O-RAN Alliance to ensure alignment on the development of interoperable 5G radio access network (RAN) solutions.

One of the O-RAN Alliance’s focus areas is the development of open and intelligent RAN architecture and specifications, while TIP’s work centres on deploying end-to-end disaggregated telecom infrastructure in varying environments.
Collaboration will speed up the deployment of disaggregated and interoperable RAN solutions, ultimately lowering integration costs, the companies say.

The liaison agreement enables TIP requirements to reference O-RAN specifications. The TIP OpenRAN 5G NR Project Group will release its OpenRAN 5G NR Base Station Platform requirements document with normative references to the O-RAN specifications.

    Open core collaboration

TIP also announced it has signed an agreement with the GSMA to help share service provider requirements from the GSMA into TIP Project Group work streams, “ultimately giving operators wider solutions in the areas of operator platforms and open networks.”

In addition, TIP has reached agreements with the OpenStack Foundation (OSF) and the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance (OSA) to jointly explore collaboration areas on the newly formed Open Core Network Project Group within TIP, which is focused on developing a converged open core network implementation.

A TIP statement said, “The TIP community is committed to accelerating the deployment of efficient telecom infrastructure solutions, leveraging the principles of disaggregation, and enabling operator flexibility in network deployments and evolution. From its early days, our community has focused on working in collaboration, not just with service providers and technology providers, but also with adjacent industry consortia.”

TIP was launched at the MWC event in 2016. You can read a ‘state of the nation’ article – TIP community momentum driven by new operator demand, technology solutions, and industry alliances – written by TIP’s Executive Director, Attilio Zani, which was published yesterday.
