Italy’s biggest mobile operator, TIM, has signed a strategic agreement with Eutelsat Communications to reach remote areas.
The plan is to work towards closing the digital divide in Italy, starting in 2021, bringing broadband to the most isolated and remote areas of the country.
Under the agreement, TIM will purchase the entire transmission capacity for Italy on the two new high-performance satellites that Eutelsat has either activated or will activate in the coming months.
New satellites
They are the KONNECT ultrabroadband distribution satellite and, subsequently, the KONNECT VHTS satellite (pictured). Once activated the latter will support speeds of up to 200Mbps to be offered to a greater number of customers.
The satellite ultrabroadband service that TIM will launch in early 2021 will complement the broadband solutions already deployed, including fibre to the home, fibre to the cabinet and fixed wireless access.
TIM said this will give a greater number of people the option of working and studying at home, and access to entertainment services.
