Telefónica gets into gear with Automatic connected car deal

    -

Telefónica Business Solution has signed a deal to provide connected car company Automatic Labs with a range of solutions, including its Global SIM service (GSS).

The GSS is a single platform that is used to provision and manage all of a company’s SIMs worldwide.

Automatic Labs offers car companies a single management platform, allowing them to handle provisioning and SIM lifecycle management. Vehicle manufacturers can now choose from a range of flexible and granular data plans from Telefónica.

As part of the deal, the Spain-based operator will also offer a global service management solution, as well as support for the selection and design of hardware to support Automatic Labs in its various markets around the world.

One of Automatic Labs’ key aims is to reduce the cost of keeping a car on the road. It cites research in the United States that said drivers spend more than $8,000 on their vehicles each year.

By connecting their car to an online portal, drivers are able to track their driving habits, vehicle health and identify the best ways of improving their driving efficiency.

Earlier this year, Telefónica’s O2 subsidiary released its first fleet management solution for enterprises.

Smart Tracking provides companies with real-time data about a vehicle’s location, its driving habits and how much fuel it has left. The solution covered the whole of Europe.

Research from Giesecke & Devrient in February predicted three quarters of cars will be connected by 2020.
