Telefónica Germany is expanding its mobile backhaul as it looks to integrate its O2 and E-Plus networks.
The operator is using a smart router and network manager from SDN transport networking supplier Coriant to help cope with its growing data traffic.
Telefónica Germany finally completed the protracted E-Plus takeover last year, in a deal worth €8.6 billion.
The deal gave the operator a dominant share of the German market, with more than 60 percent of the country’s customers.
Coriant said installing the new products would give it better access to LTE-Advanced networks, as well as greater visibility and control of its network.
Cayetano Carbajo, CTO, Telefónica Germany, commented: “A reliable and agile backhaul infrastructure is key to delivering a high-quality mobile data experience for our customers.
“We need the advanced capabilities and features of the Coriant IP/MPLS router portfolio – including scalability to 100G and superior 1588v2 synchronization performance – as these will enable us to fully optimise network efficiencies and service performance across our converged network, from high-density aggregation sites to remote locations.”
The enhanced backhaul comes as Telefónica Germany looks to launch VoLTE across the country. Earlier this week the operator said it was in a position to begin rolling out the technology once manufacturers bring the relevant firmware to their smartphones.
Tarcisio Ribeiro, Executive Vice President, Global Sales, Coriant, said: “Powerful mobile devices and bandwidth-intensive applications are constantly reshaping the connectivity demands of today’s consumer and business customers.”
