Tele2 claims climate-neutrality first in Nordics and Baltics

    -

The operator says it is the first climate-neutral telco in the region with 100% renewable energy and offset of remaining emissions.

As a result, the group’s total carbon dioxide emissions have decreased by more than 90%, or 45,000 tons per year.

Anders Nilsson, CEO and president of Tele2, said, “This is a fantastic result of long-term efforts in both Sweden and the Baltics.

Tele2’s services have always enabled smarter and more energy-efficient societies, but we should never stop looking for ways to decrease our own carbon footprint. This achievement will also be a great foundation for the rollout of our 5G network later this year.”

Tele2’s next goal is to become the first telco to achieve a climate-neutral value chain in all the markets where it operates.

“Becoming the first climate-neutral telco in our markets is a very important step for us. People tend to forget that our nationwide networks require a significant amount of electricity to uphold broad coverage.

“I am sure that Tele2’s efforts will encourage an increasing demand for sustainable connectivity going forward,” said Petras Masiulis, CEO Baltics at Tele2.

In September, many of the world’s largest mobile operator groups, including Tele2, agreed to start disclosing their climate impacts as part of a new initiative led by the GSMA.

The aim is to develop a mobile industry roadmap for action on climate change in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°c by 2050.
