The launch of Denmark’s first 5G network will take place on 7 September and will reach up to 80% of the population by the end of the month.
The network operator says more than 90% of the population will have access by the end of 2020.
The 4G network has been upgraded at the same time. Pfisterer said, “Throughout Denmark, TDC NET’s mobile network will experience significant improvements in connections.”
Replacing Huawei
Ericsson is now TDC NET’s preferred supplier and during 2020 the operator is spending some 2.6 billion Danish krone (€349 million) in 2020 on its networks, including fibre, replacing Huawei equipment as it goes.
Ericsson also has 5G contracts in neighbouring Norway with Telenor and Telia.
CEO of TDC NET, Andreas Pfisterer, commented, “I am happy and proud that we have so quickly fulfilled our ambitions to open up for 5G coverage at a wide national level and provide access to particularly fast speeds in the centre of Copenhagen (pictured), Odense, Aarhus and Elsinore.
“The opening is important at a time when we more than ever need a strong infrastructure to handle the consumption of mobile data growing by up to 40% per year. The upcoming opening means that the largest service provider on the network, Nuuday, will soon be able to offer their customers access to the network of the future.”
First service providers
At Nuuday, mobile customers at TDC Erhverv, YouSee, Telmore will be the first in Denmark to use the 5G network when it opens on 7 September. Later this year, mobile customers at Relatel are expected to gain access to the 5G network.
TDC NET started its 5G rollout on Zealand in October 2019 and has since upgraded 2,650 mast positions throughout Denmark.
