Swisscom, EE clinch gold in latest network tests

    -

Swisscom and EE have been deemed the best networks in Switzerland and the UK, in two separate tests of market performance.

Ookla’s Speedtest scored Switzerland’s three operators according to an aggregation of their upload and download speeds.

Swisscom scored 39.02, Sunrise 35.69 and Salt 29.55. The operators had an average download speed of 44.55MBps, 38.78MBps and 32.52MBps respectively.

Swisscom also scored highest for average upload speed (14.59MBps) and average latency (32ms). The operator’s outgoing CTO and CIO Heinz Herren said: “This result demonstrates that our sustained and significant investments in the mobile network are really paying off for our customers.”

More than half a million tests were carried out during the six months until 30 June.

Meanwhile, EE has won its tenth best performance award in a row from testing agency Rootmetrics. It topped the overall performance, network reliability, network speed, and data, call and text performance categories.

Overall, EE scored 96 out of 100, followed by Three with 93, Vodafone at 90.1 and O2 at 86.6.

Kevin Hasley, Head of Product at Rootmetrics, said with the advent of 5G, network quality will remain a key differentiator, as well as the ability to successfully deploy next generation infrastructure.

He said: “The first movers in 5G are going to have an advantage as consumers will see a big step change in performance of their devices across critical functions like live streaming video.

“EE’s high performance in 4G testing can lead to a seamless service transition to 5G; however it will be a brand new playing field once the technology is live. 5G will give all networks an opportunity to be a leader in performance and service provision.”

During the first half of the year, Rootmetrics held 590,000 tests across 21,000 miles of the UK and at 654 indoor locations.
