SK Telecom readies virtual IoT network with Samsung’s help

    -

Samsung has been picked as the sole vendor for SK Telecom’s nationwide rollout of NFV, with the company providing infrastructure for the operator’s Internet of Things network.

SK’s IoT network is planned to go live by the end of June this year, with plans to initially offer package tracking, CCTV monitoring and sensors deployed across cities. Samsung will be providing its AdaptiV Core solution for the network.

The solution will be used to handle traffic running to and from IoT devices, scaling up or down when necessary using a cloud manager. The AdaptiV core includes a virtual Evolved Packet Core and runs on a kernel-based virtual machine hypervisor.

Samsung had been working with SK Telecom on a virtualised evolved packet core proof of concept project in late 2013, along with a subsequent number of virtualisation trials.

Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, said: “NFV is one of the core technologies of next-generation mobile networks and will play a critical role in helping telecom operators in terms of network deployment, management and operation as well as service efficiency and rapid scalability.”

Jong-bong Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Network Division at SK Telecom, added: “SK Telecom is preparing for the IoT era through active business collaboration. Through the application of virtualised network technologies, we are confident that we can deliver a truly consistent and innovative network as well as superior service quality.”

SK Telecom has been busy in the technology space in recent weeks, rolling out new het-net tech with the help of Nokia Networks. It also teamed up with the Finnish vendor to work on research on 5G millimetre wave technology.
