Sigfox aims high with Spanish IoT security project

    -

Internet of Things and M2M network provider Sigfox is working with two Spanish companies to deploy a large-scale security network across the country.

The project will see European security firm Securitas Direct connect and monitor “millions” of security devices in homes and businesses across Spain, in what Sigfox is calling “one of the world’s most ambitious deployments of connected security devices”.

The devices will be connected via Sigfox’s dedicated IoT network, which is designed specifically for two-way, small communications between machines.

Spanish telco Abertis will deploy the system throughout the country using its own infrastructure.

Jaap Groot, Sigfox vice president of global sales, said: “Securitas Direct is Spain’s leading supplier of alarms and connected services for smart homes, and this deployment demonstrates again the diverse services that Sigfox’s IoT network allows.”

“The network deployment in Spain by Abertis Telecom is a major step towards our goal of one billion connections.”

Sigfox claimed its system provides a cost and energy-efficient solution for M2M and IoT implication, as well as extending the battery and service life of connected devices.

The company told Mobile Europe that its software-based system works with existing hardware, meaning its IoT network could be rolled out quickly across pre-installed infrastructure.

For example, the latest project involved the construction of just 1,500 cell sites across Spain, as opposed to some 20,000 Sigfox claimed would normally be needed for a project of its scale.

Sigfox’s network is already operating in “several” European countries and will be deployed in the UK in November.
