Samsung and Telefónica I+D, the Spanish telco’s research arm, are working together on a new Internet of Things project, which aims to integrate the operator’s Thinking Things ecosystem into the manufacturer’s products.
Thinking Things is a modular smart home product, launched last October, which allows consumers to control the lighting, heating or humidity of their home by connecting to a software platform in the cloud through 2G.
Both companies are seeking to find out how Thinking Things can work with Samsung’s products, as well as pushing new developments in the Internet of Things.
The companies have produced two prototypes. The first will allow people to operate compatible Thinking Things devices through a Samsung smart device.
The second prototype involves exploring new ways of bolstering how people can use home appliances and automation remotely through a specially designed button.
Alfredo Aragüés, Samsung Spain’s R&D division lead, said: “This initiative with Telefónica allows us to explore the countless possibilities offered by Samsung’s industry leading technology in order to create innovative solutions and make them available for our consumers.
“At Samsung, we believe that the true value of IoT technology is making the user experience easier and more intuitive. This is why we regard Telefónica’s Thinking Things platform as an excellent environment for the development of revolutionary initiatives in the IoT field that will be able to bring these opportunities to life in the present day.”
