Samsung claims breakthrough of 305Gbps on 5G SA Core

    -

The performance breakthrough was achieved working with Intel, using its Xeon Scalable processor and Ethernet Network Adapter E810.

Samsung Electronics and Intel say they companies achieved a 5G SA Core data processing capacity of 305Gbps per server and reduced improvement in “a mobile network environment with commercial features enabled”.

It was accomplished using the second generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor and the Intel Ethernet Network Adapter E810 with Enhanced Dynamic Device Personalization (DDP).

The capacity of 305Gpbs is equivalent to hosting more than 200,000 people who are live-streaming standard definition (SD) videos simultaneously: this bump in performance should improve the economics of 5G Core network deployments, and help speed up their adoption.

The hope is that this, in turn, will foster more immersive 5G use cases which require faster links with less delay such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X – see article on page 32).

    5G’s booming capacity

The press releases explains the foundations for the improvement: normally, data processing requires a complex path using multiple cores, including packet distribution, transmission, and processing cores.

With the Intel Ethernet Network Adapter E810 with Enhanced DDP, the data distribution and transmission functions are better optimised across the network adapter and the CPU cores, resulting in higher performance.

“The transition to 5G Standalone Core is essential to achieve the full potential of 5G,” said Alex Quach, Vice President and General Manager, Wireline and Core Network Division, Intel Corporation. “This milestone achieved with Samsung is a verification of how strong industry collaboration and the use of innovative technologies can enhance performance to accelerate this transition and pave the way to new network and edge services.”

    More collaboration

Separately, Samsung announced a plan to collaborate with IBM to develop edge computing, 5G, and hybrid cloud solutions to help businesses across all industries modernise their operations and realise the promise of Industry 4.0.

They intend to provide enterprises with new solutions for mobile edge computing and end-to-end private 5G networks that run on open architecture and 5G-enabled Samsung Galaxy devices. More information here.
