Qualcomm has started work with Daimler on connected car technologies, as the chipset maker also announced the first operator deal for its biometrics platform.
Daimler, which makes Mercedes Benz cars, will explore how vehicles can be upgraded with mobile technology. Both companies will look at 3G and LTE connectivity, wireless charging technology and Qualcomm’s electric vehicle charging technology.
Derek Aberle, president of Qualcomm Incorporated, said: “Our work with Daimler AG is a natural extension of the sponsorship we have with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team as our work in motorsports cultivates the innovation and advancements seen in the auto space.
“The automobile has become a mobile platform and an extension of always-on connectivity, and as such, we’re utilising our expertise as the leader in mobile technology to deliver in-car experiences comparable to the ease and convenience of smartphones.”
Meanwhile, Japan’s NTT DOCOMO has become the first operator to implement Qualcomm’s Snapdraon Sense ID biometrics platform to provide log-in authentication and carrier billing payment services to its customers.
The platform is being used alongside third party biometric sensors on smartphones from Sharp and Fujitsu, with plans to extend it to other high-end handsets this winter.
Qualcomm has implemented the Fast Identity Online protocol onto the platform, which also features its own secure authentication framework. The platform is managed by Qualcomm’s own SecureMSM technology, which is run by its Snapdragon processors.
Seiji Maruyama, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Product Department, NTT DOCOMO, said: “DOCOMO is excited to be the first operator to offer its consumers a new and differentiated way to authenticate to their mobile devices.
“By collaborating with Qualcomm Technologies on the deployment of the Snapdragon Sense ID biometrics platform, our customers can now unlock their phones without having to key in a pincode, and can make mobile payments with a quick glance.”
