    Proximus NXT tests 5G slicing for electronic payments at winter festival

    In the city of Dendermonde, the operator’s unit teamed up with cashless payment provider EventPay in its first such test of 5G slicing capabilities

    Belgium’s Proximus set up a temporary network at the start of the month-long Wintermonde festival in city of Dendermonde, which included a dedicated slice. The slice had a guaranteed capacity to handle payments, accessible to a limited number of EventPay devices. During the first weekend of the event, around one third of the payments at the event were handled through devices connected to via the dedicated slice.

    After this first test, Proximus expects to set up several other proofs of concept with customers in the coming months. The first commercial slicing products are expected to be available later in 2024, including for in emergencies, festivals and other large public events, of course.
