Qualcomm has completed its takeover of Wilocity, which develops 60GHz WiGig wireless chipsets, as it launches a new range of tri-band platforms to support the likes of 4K video and content sharing.
The vendor has invested in Wilocity since 2008 and been working with it on tri-band solutions for the computing sector since 2011. Qualcomm is using its Snapdragon 810 processor to support new tri-band wireless products.
Wilocity CEO Tal Tamir said: "The Wilocity team will build upon Qualcomm's strengths and leadership to collaboratively deliver innovative wireless technology for mobile, computing and networking customers to address the needs of an increasingly connected world."
Qualcomm said its new tri-band Wi-Fi solution combines multi-gigabit capability of the 802.11ad standard at 60GHz, 802.11ac at the 5GHz band and 802.11b/g/n at the 2.4GHz band.
By rolling in 60GHz capabilities into its mobile platforms, Qualcomm said it is able to give users "near instantaneous access" to the cloud and increased cellular network offload.
