    Polkomtel debuts VoLTE in Poland

    -

Polish operator Polkomtel has held a successful trial of voice over LTE on its Plus network, the first time the technology has been used in the country.

The test was completed using infrastructure provided by Huawei and the vendor’s Ascend P7 smartphone. Participants in the test made high definition calls and sent SMS over the LTE network.

Jacek Felczykowski, CTO of Polkomtel, said: “Our Research and Development Department is very dynamic, we have a brilliant team of professionals who develop new technological solutions. Thanks to them Polkomtel and Cyfrowy Polsat were first to introduce LTE for individual customers.

“Two weeks ago, as the first company in Poland and one of the first companies worldwide, we carried out video broadcast via mobile networks in LTE Broadcast (eMBMS) technology. Now we are finalising the successful trial of VoLTE. We hope that thanks to our work Plus will increase its competitive advantage over its direct competitors.”

As part of the trial, Huawei introduced extended single radio voice call continuity, to ensure handover to calls from LTE networks to 3G or 2G when a caller moves out of range.

According to the latest figures from the Global mobile Suppliers Association, there are 11 operators that have launched VoLTE, with 116 operators launching HD voice across 75 countries. It said 71 operators are currently holding tests of VoLTE.

Deng Taihua, Vice President, Huawei Central Eastern European and Nordic region, said: “Huawei is proud of our partnership with Polkomtel, which has resulted in the successful completion of a pioneering technical deployment of VoLTE in Poland. It reflects the growth and maturity of the VoLTE ecosystem in the marketplace. We will continue to collaborate to ensure the service quality and innovation of Polkomtel’s VoLTE network.”
