Orange and Google Cloud team up for data, AI and edge computing services

    -

The collaboration underlines the operator’s commitment to use AI and data to speed transformation across its European footprint.

Orange’s Engage 2025 plan said the transformation is to improve operational efficiency and the customer experience.

The strategic partnership also paves the way to develop new cloud, edge computing and cybersecurity services to create new business opportunities for Google Cloud and Orange. (See separate article on Orange’s exploration of AI and data here).

In particular, they will look to deploy edge capabilities in support of sectors including retail, and gaming.

    Rationale

The rationale for the duo is that Google brings expertise in cloud technologies, analytics and AI tools, digital transformation methodology and dedicated resources, while Orange contributes expertise in information and communication technology services and its multi-national network infrastructure.

Orange and Google Cloud agree to jointly create an Innovation Lab and a Centre of Excellence intended to foster innovation and growth:
     •    The Innovation Lab will develop industry solutions based on data and AI within the broader framework of the evolving 5G/edge computing ecosystem.
     •    Google Cloud will support various parts of the Orange Group via the Centre of Excellence as they engage in cloud transformation. The centre will provide training in data, AI and cloud services for thousands of Orange employees.

    Support from the top

Stéphane Richard, Chairman and CEO of Orange, said, “Google has been a long term partner of Orange and, as Google is eager to invest in Europe – and especially in France – to develop new data centres, this is the perfect time to work on new services and opportunities in French and European markets.”

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said, “The strength of Orange’s network, combined with Google Cloud’s platform, will help pave the way for new advanced cloud and edge computing services for the telecommunications industry in Europe.

“We look forward to working together with Orange to bring new services and applications to customers and businesses alike, while also continuing to grow our support for European enterprises in their digital transformation journeys.”
