Operators face next-gen challenges in extracting value from data

    -

The panel at Telecom Europe LIVE described their goals and how they plan to achieve them with Francis Haysom, Principal Analyst at Appledore Research moderating

As Aleksandra Jovic, Director of Data & Analytics at Telekom Srbija, said in her opening remarks, “Like everyone else, the problem we have is how to get business value from data?” Her company uses network data for monitoring and smarter capex, but the big focus is on how to generate greater customer satisfaction and ARPU, and strengthen the relationship with customers.

    Not only the ground up

Prashant Kumar, Chief Innovation Officer at Elisa Polystar, said his company is looking at 18-month roadmaps to see where it can innovate more with data. He noted that data sets are ever bigger and 10 to 100 times more complex. He said data lakes are 10 years old and silos still exist, mostly due to ground-up thinking in isolation – “data is just dumped there and next thing you know, you’re fishing for information in dirty ponds,” he stated.

Kumar added, “You need to work backwards from the problem, but build the solution from the ground up. If you build working backwards from the problem you end up creating five silos.”

    Northbound APIs

Aaron Partouche, Innovation Development Director at COLT said his company that faced different challenges in handling of different kinds of data. For example, network data is used by many parts of his organisation, mostly for service assurance. COLT recognises that it could be leveraged to bring added value customers and is looking at how it could do this, using APIs and portals.

It already offers APIs and portals to customers, but mostly this is east to west types of APIs, rather than northbound – research into gaining value from northbound APIs was offered in another session at Telecom Europe LIVE by STL Partners.
