O2 UK is deploying traffic management software across London to help improve the performance of its 3G and LTE networks.
The operator is teaming up with network capacity specialist Vasona on the project, which builds upon a trial the two companies held of the vendor’s products last year.
O2 will deploy Vasona’s SmartAIR 1000 edge application controller and its SmartVISION analysis suite. The former tracks congestion at a cell level and responds immediately to minimise the levels of latency and avoid packet loss across the radio access network. Vasona said this improves user experience as well as the performance of new RAN investments.
The SmartVISION software solution shows real-time and historical quality of experience performance across a network’s individual cells. It provides a dashboard for operators, as well as metadata and regular reports.
Brendan O’Reilly, O2 UK Chief Technology Officer, said: “At every stage of our work with Vasona Networks, the company demonstrates the ability to drive network performance improvements during peak times of the day so that our customers get a consistent experience when using their mobile device.”

Other Telefónica regions have been trialling Vasona’s software in its other markets.
According to a report from network tracker RootMetrics, O2 has the second best performing network in London although it lies in third place for median download and upload speeds.
