Nvidia has agreed to acquired AI platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion.

As a result, the deal is expected to help Hugging Face grow its platform, improve its infrastructure and make AI more accessible globally.

Over the past decade, Hugging Face has become a major platform for AI developers and researchers. More than 18 million people use it to share over three million models, 500,000 datasets and one million applications.

More than 200,000 companies also use the platform, the company stated.

Despite the acquisition, Hugging Face will remain open to different models, frameworks, cloud providers and computing platforms.

Developers will not be required to use Nvidia hardware to build or deploy through the platform.

Hugging Face will also continue supporting open-source and open-weight AI models from different companies and organisations.

In a statement, Nvidia President and CEO, Jensen Huang, said: “AI advances faster when people can build together.”

Nvidia has already contributed more than 500 models and 250 datasets to Hugging Face. According to the company, its technology and global resources could help Hugging Face improve its reliability, safety and AI deployment tools.

Huang, added: “We share this vision, and the Hugging Face team will now bring their passion and expertise to a much larger canvas, with their same iconic brand.

“We can’t wait to build the future together with you. Together, we will make AI more open, more capable and more accessible to people and institutions around the world.”
