Nokia Networks and NTT DOCOMO have used millimetre wave technology to hit data transmission speeds of more than 2GBps on the 70GHz band.
Both companies held the indoor trial using a proof of concept system comprising an access point and equipment with 1GHz bandwidth. Nokia said it used 5G PHY and MAC software to ensure beam tracking for pedestrian mobility, which maintained speeds of more than 2GBps.
According to the Finland-based vendor, the demo was part of NTT DOCOMO’s plans to launch a commercial 5G network by 2020.
An outdoor trial is planned later this year.
Seizo Onoe, CTO of NTT DOCOMO, said: “Utilising higher frequency bands including millimetre wave is key to deliver extremely high performance in 5G. We believe that high frequency spectrum shall be used not just for small cells as a means to complement the existing network, but also for building solid area coverage through coordination with existing lower frequency bands.”
Hossein Moiin, CTO of Nokia Networks, added: “We have laid a strong foundation for realising DOCOMO’s 5G vision. We will ensure that our focus is clearly trained on helping the operator monetise the immense revenue potential of future-ready technologies to effectively address ever-increasing network coverage and capacity requirements.”
The announcement builds on another new technology innovation Nokia has unveiled.
iSON Manager, a centralised SON solution for running multi-vendor hetnets, has been trialled with Korea Telecom.
Nokia said it helped reduce radio network energy consumption by 40 percent.
The solution comes with more than 20 features that configure, optimise and heal multi-vendor hetnets.
