Nokia has updated its Cloud Packet Core offering to include support for new fixed and wireless access technologies that will allow operators to deliver IoT services.
The cloud-based core will support licensed technologies including 4.5G, 4.5G Pro and 4.9G as well as unlicensed technologies such as MulteFire and CBRS, in addition to fixed access.
The core, which previously only supported wireless technologies such as 2G, 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi, will allow the new technologies to be used either individually or together.
The expansion of the platform aims to help operators to cope with the scalability demands that come from new devices connecting to networks, Nokia said.
“Broadband evolution to 5G and IoT/Machine Type Communications will place a diverse set of service characteristics and requirements on the network,” explained Sri Reddy, Head of the IP Routing and Packet Core Business Unit at the Finland-based vendor.
“These services will need to be concurrently delivered across the widest range of fixed and wireless technologies to provide a seamless service experience and support extensive personalisation. The Nokia Cloud Packet Core provides the converged anchor point to make this possible. With its cloud-native architecture, it has the flexibility, performance, scalability, reliability and improved operations for organisations to embrace and profit from mobile broadband, IoT/MTC and coming-5G opportunities.”
Tele2 announced it would deploy Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core solution across its entire footprint last July. Its Croatian operations will be the first destination for the product, followed by Sweden, the Baltic states, Austria, the Netherlands and Kazakhstan.
