New voice, video products to fuel diameter signalling explosion

    -

New video and voice products and an increase in personal data plans will cause the LTE diameter signalling market to grow from 12 million messages per second(MPS) last year to 216 million MPS in 2018.

The latest figures from Oracle’s third Diameter Signalling Index revealed that policy and charging MPS will double each year between 2013 and 2016. By 2018, it will account for 72 percent of signalling volumes.

Europe, the Middle East and Africa will be the third largest market in terms of signalling volume, with almost 47 million MPS generated in 2018. This is significantly behind the market leader Asia Pacific, who will overtake North America in 2016 and generate almost 105 million MPS by 2018, 49 percent of the global total.

Diameter messages enable the likes of subscriber network access, VoLTE, LTE broadcast, charging and usage-based services and the connection with roaming or content partners. Between 2013 and 2017, VoLTE will be the second biggest source of global LTE diameter signalling traffic, with LTE broadcast generating more than 26 million MPS from 2018 onwards.

Dimitris Mavrakis, Principal Analyst of Intelligent Networks at Ovum, said: “Voice over LTE has achieved a critical mass of service provider deployments and interest in LTE broadcast is increasing. Service providers that wish to lead their markets with innovative voice and video offerings must anticipate their traffic demands and unique signalling requirements.”

Beyond 2018, Oracle said the increasing adoption of software defined networking and network functions virtualisation will fuel demand for more types of diameter orchestration.

Bhaskar Gorti, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Oracle, said: “The rapid growth of LTE and the corresponding increase in subscribers’ data consumption show how service and content providers are meeting people’s needs. We are in the early stage of LTE innovation, and new video and voice offerings will further propel LTE into the mainstream and require a scalable and reliable underlying diameter signalling infrastructure.”
