Telekom Austria’s Bulgarian subsidiary has completed its first Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) trial, streaming content through a virtualised packet core over an LTE network.
Mobiltel completed the trial along with its partner Affirmative Networks to demonstrate high definition video streaming.
The operator said that it hopes customers will be able to eventually record and directly stream smartphone content onto the cloud.
This would remove the need to move content from a smart device onto a computer, it added, giving better data loss protection and making the consumption of multimedia content easier.
Mobiltel is the latest Telekom Austria subsidiary to complete an NFV trial. Earlier this month, VipNet completed a similar demonstration in showing how its customers could record and stream content to and from their smartphone via the cloud.
Mobiltel CTO, Horst Pertl, said: “The successful start of the NFV technology is a result of the continuous investment the Group makes towards the development of technologies, IT infrastructure and products.
“Our planned investment for 2014 equals more than €100 million. As one of the first European operators to trial NFV we are proud to successfully contribute to the Telekom Austria Group technology strategy.”
