Mastercard to help bring Samsung Pay to Europe

    -

Samsung is planning to bring its mobile payments service to Europe after extending its partnership with Mastercard.

The smartphone maker will use Mastercard’s Digital Enablement Service (MDES), which will allow European card issuers to connect to the platform and activate the service when it launches.

A launch date for the service is to be confirmed, with Samsung currently working with banks and partners. When it goes live, cardholders will be able to upload their credit, debit and prepaid cards to Samsung Pay and use their NFC-enabled smartphone to make payments.

Samsung Pay will be debuted in the United States and South Korea later this summer.

Injong Rhee, EVP of Samsung Electronics, Global Head of Samsung Pay, said: “Samsung Pay is pleased to join forces with MasterCard to offer a simple and safe mobile payment experience enabled for wider merchant acceptance to MasterCard cardholders and issuers in Europe. Both organisations are committed to ground breaking fintech innovations that will deliver on the promise of a true mobile wallet.”

Javier Perez, President of MasterCard Europe, said: “Europeans have been leading the way in the adoption of new ways to shop, buy and make a payment. Through our strong partnership with Samsung we look forward to continuing to drive innovation in mobile commerce by creating simple and secure digital payment experiences for consumers.”

Earlier this month, the United Kingdom became the first market outside of the United States to feature Apple Pay, the iPhone manufacturer’s own contactless payment service.

Android Pay, Google’s revamping of its longstanding Wallet initiative, will come preinstalled on Android M phones when the latest version of its operating system launches later this year.
