New Iliad-owned network could be epic experience
California-based kit maker Juniper Networks is to build a 400G-ready network for UPC Poland’s international core infrastructure.
UPC Poland is Liberty Global’s top revenue-generator operation in Central and Eastern Europe and Poland’s largest cable TV operator, said a Juniper statement.
Its network currently supplies broadband internet, digital television, mobile and digital telephony (VoIP) services to 3.7 million consumers and a range of 1Gbps voice and data services to businesses.
UPC Poland is to be part of Iliad in 2022
In September it was reported that Liberty Global is selling UPC Poland to Iliad’s polish operator for €1.5 billion. Juniper says the network owner can expect the router to cope with capacity demands for the next five years.
UPC Poland says exponential traffic growth on its network has to be handled now while covering all eventualities as consumers rise in numbers and demand better quality of service for their high-definition devices. The routing platform upgrade has a particularly tough target – to meet demand for the next 10 years and avoid expensive, wasteful rip-and-replace requirements, according to Juniper.
Pay as you grow keeps lid on TCO
Juniper is installing the PTX10008 Series as the modular core router, which offers 100GbE and 400GbE port density with full flexibility of port speed (multi-rate) in the smallest footprint possible. Juniper claims the system will give the best available five-year total cost of ownership through the pay as you grow licenses on chosen line cards. It claims UPC Poland’s projected capacity growth over five years can be offered on a single PTX Series chassis.
The first network node is already in place in Poznan, with another in Warsaw to follow. A further three nodes will then be rolled out to create a nationwide infrastructure to underpin UPC Poland’s digital transformation.
Service providers need to balance cost, capacity and performance with sustainability factors in their networks, according to Brendan Gibbs, automated WAN solutions VP at Juniper Networks. UPC Poland’s deployment combines physical and virtual inventions to show how it can be done, he said.
Juniper was easy option to choose
“The connections we are building apply on multiple levels in UPC Poland’s new network, providing consistent, superior digital user experiences for our millions of subscribers while being mindful of space and power consumption in our data centres and points of presence,” said Monika Nowak-Toporowicz, VP and CTIO for UPC Poland & UPC Slovakia, “the choice of Juniper was a strategically easy decision to make.”
