Huawei technology chief: “We can automate the entire society”

    -

The head of Huawei Communications Technologies Labs has said it will be possible to automate “the entire society” in the future as 5G wireless technology fuses with cloud computing and big data.

Dr Wen Tong made the statement in a release outlining the vendor’s vision for 5G, which it believes will emerge between 2020-2030.

“5G wireless will, first of all, open the frontiers of a new end-user experience,” said Dr Tong. “For example, visual communication will become the mainstream, and people will use wireless devices to interact instantly with people remotely, as if they were meeting face-to-face.

“5G wireless will also wirelessly connect an enormous number of ‘things’ to the network. In combination with cloud computing and big data technologies, we can essentially automate the entire society.”

There is “no doubt” that 5G wireless technologies are necessary to support the evolution of our ever-expanding wireless world, according to Huawei, which claims the next decade will see a 1,000-times increase in the demand for wireless capacity.

In February, Neelie Kroes, the vice president of the European Commission, pledged €50 million in funding to back research into 5G.

Huawei believes radio access capability will ultimately allow every person to access the wireless network at a speed of 10Gbit per second, 100 times faster than the fastest mobile device on the market today.

However, Dr Tong said there are a lot of innovations that need to be created and a lot of technology challenges that need to be overcome for 5G to succeed.

In particular, his researchers are studying the new radio link technologies and new radio access network architecture, as well as cloud-based radio access networks.
