Ericsson starts deploying Dots in Mexico City

    -

Ericsson is deploying more than 1,000 of its Radio Dot Systems across Mexico City, after signing a contract with Telefónica Mexico to improve indoor coverage.

The small cells will improve LTE and WCDMA coverage across shopping malls, airports and commercial buildings. Ericsson cited research that said while 90 percent of people’s time is spent indoors, only three in 10 smartphone users are happy with their call quality, coverage and reliability.

The project has already begun and Ericsson said by the end of this year, 1,080 dots will be up and running across various locations in Mexico City.

Eduardo Ricotta, Vice President, Ericsson Latin America, said: “Mexico City is the perfect place for Telefónica’s largest deployment of Ericsson Radio Dot System. The city is full of high-rise buildings and millions of people wanting excellent mobile broadband services, which Telefónica can now provide in a cost-efficient way.”

Omar Calvo, Engineering Director, Telefónica Mexico, added: “The agreement is focused on reinforcing services with higher value proposition. We have been looking to cover all shopping malls, starting with Plaza Cosmopol in Estado de Mexico and Plaza Galerías in Pachuca, Hidalgo during this first delivery. In the short term, we foresee the implementation in 50 facilities within Mexico City.”

Recent research found the small cell sector experienced double digit growth during the past 12 months, although it is still trailing behind the traditional RAN market.

Meanwhile, Proximus’s CTO told Mobile Europe in an exclusive video interview that small cells are a critical means of improving customer experience.
