Ericsson and Huawei have extended their global patent licence agreement that applies to their GSM, UMTS and LTE cellular standards.
The deal means both companies will be able to implement the other’s standard essential patents and technologies in any market.
Huawei will make ongoing royalty payments to Ericsson from this year onwards. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Kasim Alfalahi, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson, said: “We are happy to see an extension of the agreement. The extension shows our commitment to drive innovation and industry development. In the future, everyone and everything will be connected through the Networked Society and Internet of Things. Our role is to drive this transformation, opening up new ways to innovate, to collaborate, and to empower people, business, and society.”
Jianxin Ding, Head of Global Intellectual Property, Huawei Technologies Co., said: “This new agreement reflects the two leading companies’ joint view that innovation and intellectual property rights shall be protected, and reasonable compensation for the implementation of intellectual property rights is vital to promoting technology innovation, sharing and standardizing technology, driving and accelerating industry evolution.”
Meanwhile, Huawei has used spatial multiplexing in a new nine-sector solution that it claimed helped improve capacity without adding more sites or spectrum to a network. It said trials in Myanmar and Thailand used three-beam high-gain antennas increase capacity.
