Ericsson and SingTel have entered a partnership to evaluate and test 5G technologies in Singapore across a range of industry applications.
The companies will conduct research and trials in an attempt to establish the best candidate for future standardisation of 5G, with cloud core, radio technologies and M2M noted as key areas of interest.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed that also includes the joint development of 5G infrastructure to help “address a wide range of use cases from consumers to industries.”
The companies will also explore the potential for 5G technology for smart city projects in Singapore.
Tay Soo Meng, CTO SingTel, commented: “We see 5G as a potential technology that will support very advanced communication needs in the future. We will endeavour to explore, study and possibly trial the 5G technologies to ensure SingTel continues its technology leadership in the mobile communications domain.”
Ericsson said the project also provided the scope for the companies to look into technologies including “massive” machine-type communications (MTC), which involves using low-powered sensors and actuators for applications in fleet tracking and building automation.
Sam Saba, Region Head of Ericsson South East Asia & Oceania, said: “5G will enable the full potential of Ericsson’s vision of the Networked Society, where everything that can be connected will be connected.
“This partnership with SingTel will enable us to further explore the opportunities that will arise with 5G…and empower people, business and society in Singapore.”
