Deutsche Telekom has launched a new smartphone security solution via a mobile network-based firewall.
The Germany-based operator has developed the technology, called Protect Mobile, in partnership with Israeli security firm Check Point.
As well as offering security against threats such as virus, worms and trojans, the service aims to detect and flag up questionable websites or Wi-Fi connections.
Customers can access the service through a dedicated mobile app, which provides notifications, error messages and information and advice about threats.
The app is designed to be intuitive for users and use a small amount of memory and battery life, Deutsche Telekom said.
The service costs €0.95 per month, with new customers and customers renewing an existing mobile contract will receive a month’s free trial.
The operator did not specify where the service is available.
Dirk Backofen, Head of Telekom Security, said: “Security solutions have to be simple, if people are to use them. And there’s no simpler solution than automatic protection by the infrastructure itself. With this product, we are revolutionising mobile security for our customers.”
Amnon Bar-Lev, President of Check Point Software Technologies, said: “With this partnership, we can protect mobile devices for millions of customers against the ever-more sophisticated threats and covert attacks. With this joint solution, we offer comprehensive protection that is unique on the mobile communications market and can identify even the most complex threats that we face today.”
Deutsche Telekom recently launched a Cyber Defense and Security Operation Centre in Bonn, with more than 200 employees collecting and analysing online threats around the world.
