Deutsche Telekom launches new project to help make cities smarter

    -

Deutsche Telekom is working with towns and municipalities across Germany to aid their shift towards smart cities.

The German operator said its Executive Program Digital Cities and Regions will develop custom-made connected solutions to meet the digitialisation needs of different parts of the country.

Fifty mayors have already given the operator a wishlist of tasks it wants help with and will announce their first projects towards the end of this year.

Deutsche Telekom said initial benefits could include lower costs of running a city and more sustainable processes. According to its research, 90 percent of citizens want their city to offer digital services. The operator added it will showcase these solutions at its forthcoming Smart City Telekom exhibition in September.

In the longer term, connectivity could offer digital services, wider and better quality broadband and smarter traffic systems, it added.

This public-private partnership follows Deutsche Telekom launching a NB-IoT network in Bonn last year.

Markus Keller, who heads the Digital Cities and Regions Centre at Deutsche Telekom, said: “Together we want to make cities fit for the digital future with a firm focus on quality of life for citizens as our first priority.

“No company, city or region can do this alone, and that is why the business sector and city administrations must work hand in hand. The defined success factors are common platforms, a good digital infrastructure and courage for cultural change.

“Despite the complexity of digitisation, the benefits for citizens must come first.”

Deutsche Telekom joins the likes of TIM and Proximus, who have announced their own smart city projects during 2018.
