Deutsche Telekom last work formally began work on the rollout of fibre infrastructure in Hamburg as part of a broader scheme to connect German businesses to fibre.
Under the Hamburg project, Deutsche Telekom aims to make broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps available to close to 1,000 businesses in the city by the second quarter of 2019.
Following an official ground-breaking ceremony, the German incumbent said building work is underway to upgrade the infrastructure connecting business parks in Hamburg.
“We’re driving the upgrade to a high-end digital infrastructure and the businesses located at the Port of Hamburg are telling us that they need that infrastructure,” said Dirk Wössner, Board of Management member for Germany at Deutsche Telekom.
He added that interest in Deutsche Telekom’s fibre-based offerings was particularly strong in the port districts of Stenzelring I and II, auf der Peute and Kleiner Grasbrook. Therefore, those areas will be the first to be connected in phase one of the build.
Deutsche Telekom said it will offer a range of fibre-based products from asymmetric 100Mbps business customer lines to symmetric 1Gbps lines, with businesses connected directly to the fibre network.
The project will see it lay in excess of 80km of fibre and install 28 distribution cabinets.
The fibre rollout in the Port of Hamburg is part of a wider programme that will see Deutsche Telekom invest more than €2 billion in the expansion of fibre-optic infrastructure in industrial parks in Germany by 2022. In total, the telco aims to connect 3,000 industrial estates, making fibre connectivity available to 400,000 businesses.
