CTO of the Year 2017: celebrating technology leaders across the entire industry

The Mobile Europe CTO of the Year award recognises the central role Chief Technology Officers play in a modern operator. The award celebrates those driving innovation and displaying an agenda-setting vision that places his or her company at the forefront of the telecoms industry.

The search for Mobile Europe’s fourth annual CTO of the Year award is now underway with new criteria and a new award to recognise all kinds of players in the industry.

This year, for the first time, we are introducing a Regional CTO of the Year award, to reflect the work a Chief Technology Officer is doing within a single market. It will be open to standalone operators trading in a single market, or CTOs within a larger Group doing innovative things within their regional market.

The larger players will be eligible to enter the Group CTO of the Year award, which is open to CTOs conducting their technology strategy across numerous markets at the highest level of the telco.

By having two awards side by side, we feel we are reflecting the true breadth of the market and recognising and rewarding innovation from the smallest to the largest telcos.

2017 and beyond will see telcos gear up towards 5G, apply the finishing touches to their LTE rollouts and continue network transformation at the heart of the company. We look forward to celebrating the very best the European telecoms industry has to offer.

CTO of the Year 2016 – Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Deutsche Telekom

Key achievements included his leadership of Deutsche Telekom’s shift towards an all-IP network, ongoing rollout of LTE and innovation within 5G. As chairman of the cross-industry NGMN group, Jacobfeuerborn has been leading the development of 5G standards and use cases.

Jacobfeuerborn said: “I am honored to receive Mobile Europe’s coveted CTO of the Year award this year. CTO of the Year 2015 – Fotis Karonis, EE

He was hailed by judges as an enthusiastic proponent of technology and its benefits, as well as being savvy enough to handle multiple network transformation projects at the same time.

Since winning the award, he has stepped up to become Managing Director for IT and Mobile Technology across the BT and EE Group.

Fotis Karonis said, “It’s an honour when experts from the industry recognise and compliment achievements and hard work, and when I saw the other CTOs that I was up against for this prestigious award I was absolutely delighted. Innovation is at the fore in the European mobile sector, so this award is only going to become more and more important as it recognises the great work being done by technology teams across the continent.”
