Broadcom has extended its channel partner programme to include module makers, design house and original device manufacturers as it looks to build its Internet of Things product range.
The new global network will provide companies and developers with greater access to Broadcom’s Bluetooth-based WICED Smart and its WICED Wi-Fi platforms, as well as its range of ethernet products.
The vendor has set up a “comprehensive” online support portal and range of resources including data sheets, videos, and product and programming guides. Broadcom will moderate the communities and said it will use them to develop an environment where developers can share ideas and form new products.
Aapo Markkanen, Principal Analyst at ABI Research, said: “The IoT offers a unique advantage that will spawn an entire new generation of innovators. Providing developers with immediate access to standardised, ultra-low-power wireless development platforms and online support communities will be instrumental in the proliferation of the rapidly expanding IoT market.”
Opinion is split as to how big the Internet of Things market could get, with Ericsson predicting 50 billion connected devices by 2020 and Huawei claiming there will be twice that by the same date.
Research released yesterday by IDC predicted the market will be worth $3.04 trillion (€2.44 trillion) by 2020, spanning 30 billion connected devices.
Vincent Brocato, Broadcom Senior Director, Global Channel, said: “As the IoT market continues to evolve, we’re seeing increased demand from thousands of emerging developers wanting to get their hands on our low-cost, highly integrated development platforms, modules and resource materials. By making our technology easy to use and widely available through our expanded global channel, companies both large and small now have immediate access to the technology and tools required to bring their innovative ideas to life.”
