    Beeline holds 5G holographic call

    -

Beeline conducted a holographic video call on the 27GHz network in the latest demonstration of potential 5G use cases.

The Russian operator worked with Huawei on the trial, which was held in the Moscow Museum. It used augmented reality glasses to transmit the digital image.

The spectrum had been temporarily allocated to the operator. The demonstration used Huawei’s gNodeB commercially available 5G base station, a 100MHz chunk of the 27GHz band and 64×64 MIMO.

The event also showcased a virtual reality use cases, where 360 degree video was broadcast into a headset. Huawei said the technology could be used for remote travel, allowing a Beeline customer to remotely buy new tariffs or purchase a smartphone from their own home.

Vasyl Latsanych, CEO of Beeline parent VimpelCom, said: “The rapid development of modern technologies sets a precedence for operators to provide subscribers with high-quality mobile communications at high speeds. That’s why Beeline is already preparing its network infrastructure and is conducting research on how to make a rational transition to 5G technologies.

“We simply wish to offer our subscribers an understanding of how such technologies can become an integral part of their daily lives, and how they can simplify and improve their user experience.

“That is why it is growing increasingly important for Beeline to test real business use cases and explore the potential client capabilities of fifth-generation mobile technologies.”

The demonstration builds upon a development agreement signed by the two telcos in May to collaborate on 5G technologies and use cases.
