Apple fixes iOS 8 after bugs, joins 5G initiative

    -

Apple has issued a fix for its new operating system and joined The Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance as it looks into 5G.

The manufacturer released an update to iOS 8 earlier this week but had to pull it within hours after owners of its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices were unable to make or take calls. Its fingerprint scanner technology was also affected.

Reports this week claimed fewer than 50,000 people downloaded the update before the issues were spotted.

The new version of iOS, 8.0.1. was launched last night to fix the errors. Other bug fixes included making its HealthKit apps available through the App Store, sorting an issue where some apps could not access photos in the Photo Library and solving a problem where consumers used data when sending or receiving SMS messages.

Meanwhile, Apple has become the latest partner of the NGMN Alliance and will work with operators and vendors to develop 5G standards.

An NGMN 5G workshop is working on the definition of operator requirements intended to support the standardisation and availability of 5G, including future business value propositions, requirement target figures, and architecture options.

Other new members of the alliance are Dutch cable operator Ziggo and Peking University.

Peter Meissner, CEO of the NGMN Alliance, said: “We are extremely happy to welcome Ziggo, Apple, and Peking University as partners of the NGMN Alliance. They will play a vital role in our efforts to shape the vision and requirements for 5G.”
