Amdocs and Intel team up to boost vRAN

    -

The Amdocs SmartRAN optimization solution will be integrated into Intel’s FlexRAN software reference architecture and take part in O-RAN MIMO test use case.

The two say this will “serve as a blueprint to help speed development of vRAN solutions”.

According to Amdocs, integrating Intel’s FlexRAN’s machine learning libraries into the solution will improve SmartRAN’s data analytics and management so customers can better tune their network for better performance.

SmartRAN can process massive sets of data using machine-learning and real-time analytics so operators service can configure network parameters and perform closed-loop optimisation of services and network resources.

    Testing O-RAN use case

Amdocs is developing its SmartRAN solution for testing use cases established by the O-RAN Alliance, starting with massive multi-antenna (MIMO).

FlexRAN will be integrated into the solution developed for the use case will to enable testing and customisation of SmartRAN. This will enable operators to develop policies, configurations and machine learning techniques to configure massive MIMO systems to meet their service level objectives.

    Customer experience

Anthony Goonetilleke, Group President of Media, Network and Technology at Amdocs, commented, “Optimisation solutions for virtualixed RAN…enable service providers to deliver both great customer experiences as well as drive network efficiency by automatically analysing a wide range of usage and network KPIs [key performance indicators] to take actions to meet service expectations while optimally utilising available network resources.”

    New use cases

“Communications service providers are embracing the use of virtualization across the entire network, including the RAN, for increased agility and cost efficiencies as they support a range of new use cases and services,” said Cristina Rodriguez, VP and GM of Intel’s Wireless Access Network Division.

She added, “Using FlexRAN to build a cloud native, virtualized RAN based on Intel Xeon processors, in combination with Amdocs SmartRAN, service providers can more quickly deploy new analytics capabilities that optimise the end user’s quality of experience.”
