Amazon has launched an IoT platform to allow manufacturers to connect devices to its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure, as Starhome also announced a new range of M2M products.
AWS IoT allows companies across a range of industries to hook their products up to its device gateway. From here, manufacturers can store, analyse and act upon data collected from objects in the home as well as cars, turbines and sensor grids.
According to Amazon, the platform provides a “shadow” copy of each connected object, which allows companies to view the status of their devices at all times. This provides a workaround if objects can not be accessed directly due to intermittent connectivity or because of power constraints.
Companies can also set policies for how the platform handles their device data and the actions they perform under various conditions. For example, it can send an alert when a pressure sensor or motion detector is triggered.
Amazon said this flexibility removed the need for custom middleware, which device makers often have to build in order to make device protocols work at the scale IoT demands.
AWS IoT also offers an SDK to help developers add IoT functionality to their devices more quickly.
Marco Argenti, VP of Mobile and IoT at AWS, said: “The promise of the Internet of Things is to make everyday products smarter for consumers, and for businesses to enable better, data-driven offerings that weren’t possible before.
“Now, AWS IoT enables a whole ecosystem of manufacturers, service providers, and application developers to easily connect their products to the cloud at scale, take action on the data they collect, and create a new class of applications that interact with the physical world.”
Meanwhile, mobile roaming company Starhome Mach launched its M2M/ IoT portfolio this week.
The portfolio focuses largely on enablement, offering bulk SIM activation management, lifecycle management and billing services for enterprises. Other features include device steering and “multiple coverage and technology choices”, according to the company.
Itai Margalit, CEO at Starhome Mach, said: “The demands of global manufacturing and mobility dictate that M2M devices need to connect anywhere in the world, but each one with its own specific requirements…Starhome Mach has developed the solutions operators need to compete on this global stage while differentiating their services at the device level to increase desirability and optimise margins.”
