Alcatel-Lucent has launched a new virtualised security product that allows operators to provide network-based malware protection.
Motive Security Guardian sits on the cloud within networks to provide “proactive” protection for end-users. The service runs in real-time and enables operators to track malicious activity over the network, alerting subscribers when their device is infected and providing step-by-step instructions on how to remove the threat.
For operators, A-L explained, the solution provides better insight into how malware attacks impact network resources and performance by helping them monitor which subscribers and devices are most vulnerable, as well as the most common types of malware. As a result, operators can improve efficiency in their networks by optimising their services where necessary.
Alcatel-Lucent said that because the solution resides within the network, it can be rapidly deployed and scaled, and removes the need for users to install security software on their device. Operators can therefore drive new revenue streams by providing security solutions directly to providers through a free package offering basic protection, or a premium service charged at a monthly fee.
Beyond mobile subscribers, the technology can also be scaled for M2M communications and “home devices”, A-L claimed. Meanwhile, the vendor added that operators would benefit from differentiation in the market and added subscriber loyalty.
Alcatel-Lucent said the product will be sold within its portfolio of network functions virtualisation products.
Patrick Tan, General Manager of Network Intelligence at Alcatel-Lucent, said: “Operators are uniquely positioned to protect their customers’ connections and content. By doing so, they are also protecting their own networks, strengthening their relationship with customers and ensuring subscribers have a high quality service experience.
“It’s well known that operators have a trusted billing relationship with customers. Providing device security is a logical next step.”
Research from Alcatel-Lucent’s Motive Security Labs found that 55 percent of subscribers would be willing to pay for security services from their network provider. It also revealed that mobile infections were rising at 20 percent annually, with 15 million devices now infected at any one time.
Patrick Donegan, Senior Analyst for Heavy Reading, said: “Automated subscriber alerts notifying them of security issues are an important part of an operator’s portfolio to combat the growing threat from cyber attackers. The cloud offers additional cost and service agility advantages as a platform for delivering these kinds of services.”
