Telenor, Telekom Austria agree LTE roaming deal

    -

Telenor and Telekom Austria Group have expanded their LTE footprints by signing an LTE roaming deal that will affect 220 million subscribers.

The peering interconnection will allow customers to use 4G services across the Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe, and Asia. The interconnection uses Telenor’s existing global roaming exchange peering agreement, as well both operators’ IP exchanges.

Telenor said the increasingly sophisticated IPX ecosystem features a number of components, such as Signaling/S6a and S9 (Diameter), Data/S8 and VoLTE, that allow operators to offer a full LTE experience to their customers while abroad.

Stefan Amon, Director Wholesale of Telekom Austria Group, said: “Mobile subscribers are increasingly expecting high quality access to their services whether they are at home or travelling. Through partnerships with proven providers we are expanding our reach and making the global LTE Roaming experience a reality.”

TAG’s retail customer base of approximately 23 million people will “benefit enormously from these enhanced services,” he added.

Bjørn Iversen, CMO at Telenor Global Services, said: “The agreement with Telekom Austria Group is a further evidence of our commitment to deliver quality services to our subscribers, who are increasingly demanding greater speed, end-to-end quality, security and reach.

“This LTE Roaming peering is important to both parties as it enables two mobile groups to expand their LTE/4G global footprint and thus to provide its end users with world class 4G coverage when travelling within each other’s area of footprint.”

In March, Telenor unveiled a new roaming initiative in a bid to increase the data usage of its customers while overseas.

Late last year Telenor signed an IPX peering agreement with Telefónica, covering more than 400 million customer across 30 countries.
