Nokia Networks has collaborated with vendors to form a new ETSI Industry Specification Group for Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), to accelerate the development of open-platform APIs for services such as its own Liquid Applications platform.
IBM, Intel, NTT Docomo and Huawei, as well as network operator Vodafone, will all work with Nokia to enable the creation of new industry specifications for MEC, with the aim of creating an “open and standardised environment” for operators to quickly deploy services using the technology.

“With Nokia Networks, we are accelerating development of Mobile Edge Computing applications and enabling a diverse and vibrant ecosystem to address the requirements of multiple operators.”
MEC, such as Nokia’s Liquid Applications platform, allows third-party application data to be held at base stations at the edge of the network, where it can be hosted before being delivered instantly to local subscribers.
By turning base stations into local hubs for service creation and delivery, MEC provides lower latency and higher throughput, as well as direct access to real-time information that can be used to offer “unique” services, such as augmented reality.
The vendor said one area that mobile edge computing could be used is in connected cars. It recently held a demonstration of its Liquid Apps platform with T-Mobile US to showcase low-latency vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure services.
Marc Rouanne, Executive Vice-President of Mobile Broadband at Nokia Networks, said: “Establishing the MEC initiative with the support of the other stakeholders will create an open multi-vendor environment at the most lucrative point within the mobile network, driving differentiated services, new applications and ultimately new revenues.
“It also builds on our view of fundamentally changing the telecom industry through increasing our collaboration with different players and partners.”
