    Vodafone Germany presses HSDPA button

    Another one for Ericsson

    Vodafone Germany has followed T-Mobile by announcing the commercial launch of HSDPA services. Hanover,Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Munich are the first cities to get the service, which will be marketed to customers as UMTS Broadband. Vodfaone says “eventually” its entire WCDMA network. which covers 70% of the population, will be upgraded.

    Hartmut Kremling, CTO, Vodafone in Germany says: “With UMTS Broadband, i.e. HSDPA, 3G moves to the fast track. Together with Ericsson we will push the fast roll-out in our 3G net accordingly.”

    Jef Keustermans, President, Ericsson Northern Europe says: “We are proud to support Vodafone with the introduction of Mobile Broadband and to continue our successful partnership. HSDPA will enhance the end-user experience to both consumer and enterprise users through higher data speeds and everywhere coverage.”

    Vodafone will use Option’s GlobeSurfer ICON data card, which will be branded as Vodafone Zuhause EasyBox. The GlobeSurfer card can reach 1.8Mbps over HSDPA, dropping tp 384kbps over UMTS and 247kbps over EDGE/GPRS.

    In addition to the commercial launch at CeBIT, Vodafone is
    demonstrating the second phase of Mobile Broadband with up to 10 Mbps over Ericsson’s HSDPA as well as Ericsson’s HSUPA  with  up to 1.5 Mbit/s.
