Huawei is teaming up with security specialist Gemalto on a new line of NB-IoT modules for connected devices.
The design will prioritise security and low power consumption, with the aim of allowing continuous operation for a period of 10 years on a single battery.
The modules aim to provide a standardised solution for applications such as smart parking sensors, intruder and fire alarms, personal healthcare appliances, tracking devices, and street lamps.
Huawei’s semiconductor arm HiSilicon will contribute the NB-IoT chipset while Gemalto will provide IoT management and security.

Xiong Wei, President of LTE Solutions at Huawei, said the new modules would complement its roll-out of 30 NB-IoT networks in 20 countries across the world.
He added: “We look to supply the market with solutions that provide stable connectivity, low energy consumption, and cost efficiency.
“The network rollout will now come with an enhanced integration and flexibility thanks to this collaboration with Gemalto.”
Suzanne Tong-Li, SVP Greater China and Korea for Mobile Services and IoT and China President, Gemalto, said the modules would help device makers “take the plunge into cellular IoT mass deployment”.
Tong-Li added: “Our collaboration simplifies the implementation of NB IoT projects combining solid security and flexibility.”
According to Berg Insight, smart meters will be a key application for NB-IoT, with the number of meters shipping with the connectivity set to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 37.8 percent from 2016 to reach 62.0 million in 2022.
