MTS hits a moving 5G target in latest Ericsson trials

-

MTS has tapped into Massive and MU-MIMO, beam tracking and โ€œdynamicโ€ TDD to hit record speeds in Russia of 25GBps.

In its latest tests with Ericsson, the Russian operator demonstrated 5G speeds on a moving device, which it claimed was another first for the country.

The trial was held in Moscowโ€™s โ€œOpening Arenaโ€ stadium, where a base station was transmitting in the 14.5-15.3GHz range. At speeds of 25GBps, MTS said it would take just 18 days to send all traffic that its subscribers used entirely in 2016, some 1,206PB.

MTS said the use of massive and multi-user MIMO โ€œsignificantlyโ€ increased data transfer rates and frequency efficiency. Beam tracking helped increase stability and throughput on a moving device, and dynamic TDD redistributed bandwidth on downlink and uplink channels.

Igor Egorov, Director of Moscow region, MTS, said: โ€œThe tests showed an absolute record for data speeds in Russia to a mobile device, and on specific examples we saw how close we are to the daily use of 5G solutions.

โ€œMTS is currently building a data transfer network and testing various solutions to ensure weโ€™re ready for 5G standardisation.

โ€œWe now hope in cooperation with our partners to develop an extended 5G demo zone for the major sporting event of 2018 in Russia.โ€

Hannes Ekstrom, Head of Customer Unit MTS, Market Area Europe & Latin America, Ericsson, said: โ€œThe scalable and dynamic 5G network gives operators the ability to create many new services and generate additional revenue streams. The 5G network will ensure the automation of business processes and the transformation necessary for the dissemination of the Internet of Things, as well as the use of services such as VR and AR.โ€

MTS signed a partnership deal with Ericsson in late 2015 to test and develop a range of 5G technologies ahead of the next World Cup in 2018.
