Nokia helps T-Mobile USA tap 28GHz for 5G demo

    -

T-Mobile USA has carried out preliminary 5G testing using 28GHz, as part of network and application trials with Nokia.

The operator held an air interface lab test using Nokia’s AirScale radio platform. T-Mobile hit speeds of several gigabits per second with real-time latencies of 1.8 milliseconds while broadcasting four simultaneous 4K videos over a mobile network.

Both companies have been holding technology showcases at T-Mobile’s experience centre, displaying 360 degree virtual reality, extreme industry automation, and massive and multi-connectivity.

Nokia said the applications demonstrate how 5G will underpin zero-latency networks, mission critical solutions and applications, interactive augmented reality and industry automation.

Further demonstrations are planned, including high order MIMO, which the telcos said would put in place steps for 5G standardisation.

Neville Ray, Chief Technology Officer, T-Mobile USA, said: “We’ve now brought 5G out of the lab and into the field. With Nokia’s partnership, we’re seeing the kind of astounding data speeds and low latency that are hallmarks of 5G and set the standard for future network performance.”

Ricky Corker, Executive Vice President and Head of North America for Nokia, added: “5G is quickly shifting into another gear. We’re excited to be working alongside T-Mobile to help drive their 5G plans and show what the future of mobile communications can be for T-Mobile’s Un-carrier customers.”

Last week, Finland’s Sonera became the latest operator to team up with Nokia to demonstrate pre-standardised 5G. It also used the vendor’s AirScale to showcase virtual reality technology.
