    Telekom Austria takes HSDPA to 3.6Mbps

    Starts with USB modem; data card to follow

    Telekom Austria has announced the launch of a HSDPA network capable of a speed of 3.6 Mbps – twice the current rate. The company will launch the higher spped service with  a Vodafone Mobile Connect USB modem, manufactured by Huawei. At the end of July the Vodafone Mobile Connect Card Broadband 3.6 will follow.

    Boris Nemsic, CEO of Telekom Austria and mobilkom austria, said: “At the end of January 2006 mobilkom austria launched HSDPA as one of the first mobile communications providers in Europe, setting a further important milestone in mobile broadband. This high-speed infrastructure is driving data card usage to a great extent, with data cards currently amounting to almost 100,000 in Austria. With today’s launch of the HSDPA 3.6 Mbit/s network and hardware we are providing customers with this revolutionary mobile broadband speed as the first operator worldwide.”

    The operator said HSDPA 3.6 Mbit/s is immediately available in all Austrian capitals.

    For those signing up to Mobile Broadband 600 for the first time the USB modem will cost EUR 49 and to Mobile Broadband 300 EUR 149. Until August 31, first-time subscribers to Mobile Broadband 600 will be able to access the A1 high-speed network starting from EUR 29 per month, and for first-time subscribers to Mobile Broadband 300 network access will start from EUR 19 per month.
